Below are highlights of the interview:
Nicole has a passion for people that goes well beyond her professional career.
In the corporate world, I often found myself at odds with established philosophies and cultures that dictated how we managed our human resources. The traditional methods of handling employee relationships felt outdated and ineffective. I knew deep down that the HR landscape was ripe for transformation.
Driven by this conviction, I decided it was time to break free from the conventional chains and forge my own path. My inspiration came from a desire to create a more empathetic, responsive, and progressive approach to HR—one that truly values and uplifts employees.
By venturing into this new territory, I aim to redefine how we view and engage with our workforce, ultimately fostering a healthier, more dynamic organizational environment.
Before founding MEND, you held leadership positions in various industries. How has your diverse corporate background influenced your approach to HR and recruiting?
Holding various leadership positions allowed me to observe HR practices across diverse industries, from manufacturing to retail and beyond. Each sector presented unique challenges and opportunities in managing human resources. This exposure provided me with invaluable insights into the different organizational cultures and HR methodologies we implemented.
Through these experiences, I learned not only the best practices from each industry but also identified the pitfalls and leadership styles I wanted to avoid. This journey helped shape my vision for a more effective HR approach, one that transcends industry boundaries and focuses on the holistic well-being of employees.
Your work spans legal, retail, and manufacturing sectors. What common HR challenges have you observed across these industries, and how do you address them?
Across all the industries I’ve worked in, from manufacturing to retail, a common challenge stood out: the gap between talk and action. Leaders often promised employees a commitment to positive change and a better workplace, but these promises frequently fell flat.
The real transformation, I realized, must begin at the top. For any meaningful change to occur, it must start with the CEO or owner. Leadership must embody the values and initiatives they champion. Without this foundational shift, promises remain empty, and employees continue to feel disillusioned.
My mission is to ensure that change is genuine and driven from the highest levels of leadership, creating an authentic, supportive, and dynamic work environment.
Mental health and sexual abuse awareness are causes you are passionate about. How do you integrate these important issues into your HR practices and company culture at MEND?
At the heart of our approach is the belief that every voice matters. We encourage our clients to create an environment where employees feel empowered to speak openly and transparently about their challenges, regardless of the potential impact on the organization. This openness can be difficult at first, often bringing initial discomfort and growing pains.
However, this candid communication is essential for driving real change. By addressing these issues head-on, organizations can implement effective solutions and foster a culture of trust and continuous improvement. Embracing transparency not only resolves immediate problems but also lays the groundwork for a more resilient and adaptive organization in the long run.
What innovative HR solutions or trends do you foresee becoming essential for businesses to adopt in the coming years?
In today’s evolving HR landscape, leveraging AI and outsourcing has become crucial. Great talent comes at a cost, and companies must be willing to invest in top-notch HR leaders to drive effective change. With technology automating many mundane tasks, HR leaders are now free to focus on strategic, high-impact initiatives.
To maintain their positions, HR leaders must evolve into thought leaders, constantly innovating and adapting to new trends and technologies. By embracing AI and outsourcing for routine tasks, organizations can ensure their HR leaders are at the forefront of change, driving organizational success and fostering a progressive work environment.
As an author and featured expert on major media platforms, what key messages do you aim to convey about the modern HR landscape?
Traditional HR practices often suffer from rigidity, making them ineffective and frustrating for both employees and leaders. The key to overcoming this challenge is embracing flexibility. In our philosophy, the answer is never “No.” Instead, we believe in adapting problems to find viable solutions, no matter the circumstances.
Employees should feel comfortable approaching HR without fear of being dismissed or ignored, and leaders should view HR as a proactive partner in solving organizational issues. By fostering a culture of flexibility and problem-solving, we can transform HR into a supportive and dynamic force that enhances employee satisfaction and organizational success.
What advice would you offer to aspiring HR professionals and entrepreneurs looking to make a significant impact in their fields?
For HR professionals, a well-rounded education is crucial. Taking psychology courses and minoring in business equips you with the skills to navigate human emotions and understand diverse personalities. As technology automates daily tasks, your role will increasingly involve guiding leaders to enhance their business through a deeper understanding of their workforce.
For entrepreneurs, it’s essential to wake up each day with the mindset, “I do not know everything.” Limiting yourself with a fixed belief system will stifle growth and ultimately affect your revenue and team. Embrace continuous learning and adaptability to foster innovation and drive your business forward. By remaining open to new ideas and perspectives, you can overcome challenges and achieve lasting success.
Balancing multiple roles can be challenging. How do you manage your work-life balance, and what activities do you engage in to recharge and stay focused?
My extensive travels allow me to experience different cultures and meet diverse people around the world. This continuous exposure to new perspectives not only fuels my personal growth but also provides much-needed moments of rest and reflection.
While I cherish these global adventures, I equally enjoy the comfort of being at home. Binge-watching Netflix or Hallmark offers a simple pleasure that balances my active lifestyle. My daughter and my fur son play a vital role in maintaining this balance, grounding me amidst the hustle and bustle of travel and work. They remind me of the importance of nurturing relationships and taking time for oneself, whether on the road or at home.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for MEND HR Solutions and MEND Recruiting over the next few years?
My priorities are always shifting, and I am optimistic about the future. The next few years are going to be busier than ever. We created a non-profit organization, called Love Inspiring Life, this non-profit will focus on pioneering a groundbreaking initiative, leading the charge in intelligence gathering and rapid-response strategies to safeguard women, children, and men from the harrowing grip of sexual exploitation and trafficking.
We are focused on our tagline “It Stops Here”.
