Healthcare is complex. The way we think about care is evolving every day, and we have seen significant shifts in the way people want to receive care. Each healthcare system has its own challenges, and everyone deserves equitable access to the best possible treatment. For Rebecca, working in healthcare marketing means serving the system with the aim of making it better for everyone, specifically by assisting individuals and organizations in gaining access to products and services while contributing to the design of solutions that aid people at every point of their healthcare journey.
Rebecca has worked in marketing for over 15 years. She spent 10 years in financial services developing expertise in a variety of areas including product-activation and retention and affinity and marketing solutions using various media. After that, she took the opportunity to change her focus to healthcare. This move provided a unique and rewarding opportunity to apply her expertise to supporting Canada’s blood system.
According to her, the challenge was “Humanizing the manufacturing of a biological product, and finding innovative ways to connect with donors, prospective donors and the patient recipients of donation to foster awareness and education.” Rebecca and her team supported product portfolios that spanned the whole system including blood, platelets, plasma, stem cells, and organs and tissues. The move unlocked a fierce interest and passion for the role she could play in supporting the healthcare system more broadly. Over the next several years, she continued to broaden her experience by applying her knowledge to diagnostics and, most recently, healthcare technology when she joined Teladoc Health in 2021.
A Full Spectrum of Care
Teladoc Health is the world’s leading provider of whole-person virtual care, revolutionizing the healthcare experience. It provides a broad range of care enabled by technology and data to enhance health on a large scale, altering the way people access care, from on-demand urgent treatment to assistance for chronic and complicated health concerns. This involves developing data-driven, tailored experiences that adapt to an individual’s changing healthcare requirements.
Rebecca handles product and commercial marketing, clinician engagement and brand for the Canadian division of Teladoc Health. Her team supports bringing products to market that meet complex demands in the public and private sectors, such as chronic disease management, telemedicine, and mental health.
“We believe in testing and learning. We push ourselves to work outside our comfort zone, explore concepts and understand the market to remain competitive. We listen to our members and clients and work together to co-create solutions to ensure we’re solving the right problems” says Rebecca.
New Approaches and Disruption
Rebecca believes that how organizations understand competition needs to influence the way they think about product and solution design. She believes that when it comes to healthcare technology, the solutions that are built and supplied compete with mainstream technology outside of the healthcare field. People connect with the environment through gadgets, apps, and platforms, which begin to set usability expectations that need to be considered and transferred into the healthcare sphere. “We aren’t just competing with other healthcare technology companies; we’re competing with experiences that intersect multiple industries.”
Learn to Achieve Stability
Rebecca defines success as more than just the next title or position. She feels that having a solution-oriented perspective makes it easy to overcommit. “In my work, I see where processes interact, and I believe that marketing is a tool that can break down obstacles to delivering solutions; however, we can’t solve everything at once.” She relies on self-awareness and a willingness to accept, acknowledge and learn from mistakes. “I talk openly with my team and create space for 360-degree feedback. When we open ourselves up to these conversations, we build better products, and stronger teams.”
Rebecca believes she is making a measurable difference in delivering care to Canadians. Working at Teladoc Health allows her to contribute at a meaningful level where she can witness the direct impact of her work, while also exercising her creative and strategic skills in solving real-world challenges.
Rebecca’s message for female leaders is to “be your own advocate and strive for communication and prioritization. Instead of trying to do everything, challenge yourself to make strategic trade-offs with your time.”
On a Mission to Redefine Care
“We’re crafting a story in Canada,” says Rebecca. “Teladoc Health has grown exponentially in recent years. It’s time to share it with Canadians.” She goes on to say that Teladoc Health is on a mission to transform care, from its award-winning platforms to robotic technology that can serve members in even the most remote of places to tools that empower members coping with chronic diseases and even real-time accessible mental health support. “Teladoc Health is meeting members where they are on their individual journeys, and it’s a privilege to be there, seeing the impact every day.”
